House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) and Rep. Buchanan released the following statements:
"Americans are tired of changing their clocks twice a year for no good reason," Chairwoman McClain said. "House Republicans are replacing an outdated system with a commonsense solution that brings more consistency to everyday life. More evening daylight gives families more time to enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and make the most of every day."
"Today, the House took an important step toward ending the outdated practice of changing our clocks twice a year by passing my bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act," Rep. Buchanan said. "This commonsense legislation reflects what Americans have been saying for years: it's time to lock the clock and make daylight saving time permanent. Permanent daylight saving time will improve public safety, promote healthier and more active lifestyles, and give families more daylight to enjoy after work and school. I'm grateful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for supporting this bipartisan effort, and I urge the Senate to send this long-overdue reform to the president's desk."
The Sunshine Protection Act makes daylight saving time permanent nationwide and ends the need to "spring forward" and "fall back" each year. States and territories that currently observe permanent standard time may continue doing so or choose to adopt permanent daylight saving time. The legislation is intended to provide greater consistency for families and workers while increasing evening daylight throughout the year.
