North Park University Alumnus and Student Take Cancer Research to Taiwan

Hands-on training in NPU's molecular biology program prepared two students for a 10-week research experience abroad.

This summer, North Park University (NPU) sent Andrew G. Daoud, BS '26, and student Jorge Rodriguez Barletta to Taiwan for a 10-week research experience studying cancer. Daoud studied cancer immuno-epigenomics, while Rodriguez Barletta studied colorectal cancer. NPU Professor of Biology Dr. Timothy Lin has supported the pair throughout their academic and professional journey, and even spent time with them in Taiwan, checking in on their research and experiences thus far.

This travel research opportunity was made possible thanks to the Taiwan Education Exchange Program scholarships and the Friends of Taiwan Foundation. The foundation, which has previously sponsored past research expeditions, is now working more collaboratively with NPU to establish more specialty scholarships for undergraduate academic trips to Taiwan, explained Lin.

"This opportunity was a great way to enter the workforce in the molecular biology and biotechnology field and to get more into a laboratory and research setting," said Daoud. "It was also a good opportunity for travel; this was my first real time being far away from home, and it was a great learning experience for it's like to be out by yourself, meeting new people; the independence was one of my favorite parts."

Daoud noted the many ways NPU prepared him for this monumental career moment. His hands-on experience in his labs taught him valuable skills, including collaborating with other scientists, cell culture, and operating various scientific equipment. He was also fresh off a third-place finish for his research presentation at the Tri-Beta National Biological Honor Society NC-1 District Research Conference. These experiences prepared Daoud for his summer research, where he performed so well that he was offered the opportunity to extend his tenure in Taiwan. Though he ultimately decided to pursue other opportunities, it reinforced how much NPU had set him up for success post-graduation.

Lin echoed this sentiment, "Throughout the molecular biology and biotechnology program, we focus on hands-on experience. We get our students ready for any challenges they might face in their careers."

Rodriguez Barletta referred to his time abroad as "career -changing." As an international student, he's no stranger to traveling abroad, but this trip challenged him both personally and academically in a way he didn't expect.

"During my time at North Park, I had developed an interest in cancer biology, and this experience allowed me to explore it; it clarified the direction that I want for my future," said Rodriguez Barletta. "This travel felt uniquely refreshing and exciting because it introduced me to a community and culture that I had never experienced before. I feel very blessed and thankful for this learning opportunity."

Beyond the lab, both students enjoyed exploring Taiwan and immersing themselves in its culture, with plenty of time to explore the country and acclimate to the culture.

"I saw many different areas, many different cultures, and I got to eat a lot of good food," said Daoud.

"My favorite part about Taiwan was its people," said Rodriguez Barletta. "During my stay, my lab mates and supervisors played a huge role in helping me adapt to the new environment. From serving as translators to tour guides, they made my life easier, and I will always be grateful for their support."
