The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, this afternoon took part in the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, promoted by Spain and co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
Within the framework of the Conference, Spain chaired, together with Jordan, Working Group 1, dedicated to the sovereignty and governance of the Palestinian state, including the reunification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority, with the aim of laying the institutional foundations of a future viable, democratic and secure Palestinian state.
"If the recognition of the Palestinian state is urgent, it is even more urgent that there be a Palestinian people in the state we intend to recognise", warned the president, denouncing the fact that "bombs continue to fall indiscriminately on the Gazan population" and that "hunger is killing women, the elderly and children". "History will be merciless towards those who remain silent or look the other way," he stressed.

In his speech, Pedro Sánchez put forward two proposals with a view to the immediate future. First, he made an urgent appeal to the international community to complete "as soon as possible" the accession of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, so that it is on an equal footing with the rest of the members of the General Assembly.
Secondly, the president called for immediate action to stop the barbarism in Gaza. In this regard, he stressed that Spain has just adopted a plan to stop the genocide, and that it "will continue to take courageous measures with those who want to join in".
Finally, he reaffirmed Spain's commitment to rationality, diplomacy and respect for international law and international humanitarian law. "Let this 22 September be remembered as the first big step. Today, more than ever, we must not be indifferent to what is unjust", he stressed.
