The City of Norman Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a prescribed burn at Saxon Park, located at 3016 36th Ave SE, on Thursday, May 7, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The burn is expected to last approximately one hour, weather conditions permitting.
The controlled burn will take place on approximately one acre of prairie near the park's parking lot and is part of ongoing efforts to follow best practices for native prairie management. Prescribed fire plays an important role in maintaining a healthy Oklahoma prairie ecosystem by reducing invasive plant species, promoting the growth of native grasses and wildflowers, and improving habitat for local wildlife.
This effort is being conducted in partnership with the Red Earth Group Sierra Club and the Oklahoma Burn Association. A formal burn plan has been developed by the Oklahoma Burn Association and approved by the Norman Fire Department Fire Marshal, ensuring the operation is carried out safely and in accordance with established guidelines.
Residents and park visitors may notice smoke in the area during the burn. There is no need to report smoke in the area. Trained personnel will be on site to manage the operation and ensure it is conducted safely and efficiently.
Community members are encouraged to avoid the immediate area during the burn for their safety and to allow crews to complete the work without interruption.
