City Manager Gerry Beaudin is pleased to announce the selection of Derek Farmer as the City's new Assistant Director of Community and Economic Development, Planning Manager. Farmer will begin his role with the City on Monday, November 10, 2025.
Farmer brings 27 years of experience in land use planning, development review, and community engagement, including leadership roles in both the public and private sectors. He has directed planning divisions throughout the Bay Area, managed complex development projects, modernized zoning ordinances, and worked closely with economic development staff and business leaders to support local vitality. His private sector work includes leading redevelopment efforts in Hayward, Union City, and Fremont, and directing interdisciplinary development and environmental review teams for local governments and federal agencies.
"Derek's broad experience in both public and private sector planning will be a great asset to Pleasanton," said City Manager Gerry Beaudin. "His collaborative approach and familiarity with Tri-Valley communities will support our ongoing efforts to plan thoughtfully for housing, pursue economic development opportunities, and address the community's long-term needs."
In Pleasanton, Farmer will help guide policy development, oversee planning and development review activities, and support strategic economic development initiatives. This position will play an important role in advancing the City's community and economic development priorities, including efforts to improve service delivery, enhance clarity and predictability in the development review process, and strengthen engagement with residents, businesses, and project applicants.
"As someone who has both lived and worked in Pleasanton, I am excited to return," said Farmer. "I look forward to working with City staff and the community to support thoughtful growth and continue building a vibrant and welcoming city."
Farmer holds a Master of Urban Planning degree from San José State University.
