The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Upholds the Institutional Work of the Consular Network in the United States

In recent days, various reports have circulated in some media outlets regarding alleged political activities promoted by Mexico's consulates in the United States. These are baseless falsehoods, which we categorically deny and refute.

The work of Mexico's consular network in the United States is grounded in the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and in the respect, commitment, and reciprocity established by the 1943 Consular Convention between Mexico and the United States.

The activities and programs of Mexico's consulates are carried out in close coordination with local, state, and federal authorities, always with full respect for United States law and the principle of non-intervention in internal affairs. Therefore, any assertion to the contrary lacks both foundation and truth.

Mexico's consulates have been established to address the needs of the Mexican community with the consent of the United States government. Their activities focus on providing consular assistance and protection to individuals of Mexican origin, including services such as issuing official documents, conducting visits to detained nationals, and the repatriation of remains, among others. Likewise, they work to promote economic and cultural relations and exchange between both countries. All of this is conducted under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, just as the U.S. consular network in Mexico does for U.S. citizens within our country.

Mexico's consular work goes beyond administrations and is not driven by political motivations, but by the pursuit of protecting Mexicans residing abroad, wherever they may be. While it is true that consular protection and assistance have been strengthened, it is absolutely false that there has been any attempt to influence or encourage participation in the internal political processes of the United States.

In 2025 alone, Mexico's consulates in the United States issued 1,295,181 Mexican passports, which in many cases are necessary for official identification and to fulfill tax obligations in the United States, constituting a clear financial and economic contribution by this community to the host country.

As the President of Mexico, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, has said repeatedly, Mexico's foreign policy is based on our constitutional principles-including non-intervention-as well as full respect for the sovereignty, institutions, and legal processes of every country. In accordance with these principles, Mexican consular offices do not promote or participate, either directly or indirectly, in demonstrations, protests, or any type of political mobilization within the United States.

Mexico and the United States share geography, history, and deep familial and social ties, ranging from our mutually beneficial trade and investment relationship to a rich heritage of cultural values. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejects any narrative that questions the institutional nature of the work performed by Mexico's consulates abroad.
