Gov. Rhoden's Anti-Doxxing Bills to Take Effect
PIERRE, S.D. - On July 1st, Governor Larry Rhoden's anti-doxxing bills, HB 1084 and HB 1298, will take effect.
"Protecting our law enforcement officers and public servants from doxxing is of utmost importance. They are on the frontlines every day, working hard to keep us strong, safe, and free, and they should never feel unsafe in their own homes," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "These bills represent an important step forward in safeguarding the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving our state."
Doxxing is the publishing of personal information about an individual, such as their home address and personal phone number, on the internet with malicious intent to encourage people to seek out that official at their home. HB 1084 stops the doxxing of law enforcement officers, and HB 1298 establishes the crime of doxxing to protect officers and judges.
Governor Rhoden and Attorney General Marty Jackley previously led implementation efforts of HB 1084 to ensure law enforcement officers' personal information is protected from bad actors. You can find the letter Governor Rhoden and Attorney General Jackley sent to law enforcement agencies here.
Governor Rhoden announced initial versions of both HB 1084 and HB 1298 in his State of the State Address, once again delivering results on his promise to keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free.
