Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced the release of $168,732,835 in long-delayed Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants to New York State for disaster relief following Tropical Storm Fred, Hurricane Ida, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other severe weather events.
These long-awaited funds, some stemming from disaster declarations dating as far back as 2013, include $60.5 million for the Jasper-Troupsburg Central School District in Steuben County, where schools were significantly damaged by flash flooding during Tropical Storm Fred. The funding also includes allocations for a hazard mitigation proposal to prevent similar damage in the district in the future. Additionally, $31 million in federal funding was granted to the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services for state management costs related to Hurricane Ida, $1.9 million was allocated for COVID-19 relief in New York City and Wyoming County, and more than $40 million was allocated to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).
"As New York continues to recover from the damage done by natural disasters and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am proud to deliver this critical federal funding across New York," said Senator Gillibrand. "These dollars will help repair local infrastructure and prevent damage from future weather events and disasters in communities across the state. I will keep fighting to make sure New Yorkers have the resources they need to recover and be protected from further catastrophes."
Senator Gillibrand's office will continue to monitor the distribution of these funds to ensure they are delivered efficiently to the impacted communities.
