Intelligent Speed Assistance and truck side-guards were among the safety innovations recognized by the nation's leading safety advocacy group
NEW YORK - The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) won the National Safety Council's 2025 Green Cross for Safety Excellence Award, recognizing DCAS' tremendous advances. The National Safety Council (NSC), the nation's premiere safety nonprofit, announced the award at the group's annual awards ceremony in Denver on Monday, September 15.
The Green Cross for Safety Excellence Award recognizes an organization that was "relentless in its pursuit of safety." DCAS earned this prestigious distinction thanks to its groundbreaking Vision Zero Safe Fleet Transition Plan and leadership in implementing safety technologies across its fleet, including Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), truck side-guards, and initiatives to improve driver visual awareness through Executive Order 39 (EO39).
"This award from the National Safety Council is a powerful validation of our work to make New York City's fleet the safest in the country," said DCAS Commissioner Louis A. Molina. "We are proud to lead the way in protecting drivers, pedestrians, and all New Yorkers through innovative technology and data-driven safety policies."
The awarded plan provides a detailed breakdown of DCAS' safety fleet investments and integrations since 2017, showcasing the progress and performance of many vehicle safety technologies. Notably, it highlights the successful implementation of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology, which reduced speeding incidences by 64% within its pilot phase. Alongside ISA, DCAS has expanded investments in, among other things, truck-surround cameras, rear and forward automatic braking, backup sensors, and lane departure alerts, demonstrating the decisive steps being taken to increase safety features for city vehicles and fortify the city's fleet overall.
"A huge thanks to Lorraine Martin and the National Safety Council for recognizing the City of New York and DCAS with their annual Green Cross Excellence in Safety award," said DCAS Deputy Commissioner and NYC Chief Fleet Officer Keith Kerman. "We're proud to partner with NSC to promote transportation safety and introduce new technology solutions like intelligent speed assistance, high vision trucks, and truck sideguards that will save lives on the roads. Congratulations to US Steel and IKEA who were finalists for the award, and thanks to all our partner agencies in city government for their shared commitment to safety and Vision Zero."
The National Safety Council, a 110-year-old non-profit, is the nation's leading safety advocate with a mission to eliminate preventable deaths in the workplace, on the roads, and in homes and communities. The Council has nearly 13,000 member organizations and 44,000 volunteers committed to advancing safety.
NSC has been actively engaged with DCAS initiatives, participating in the DCAS Annual Fleet Show last May. The safety group is also set to present at the 2025 Vision Zero Fleet Safety Forum at the Queens Theater on October 8. Sponsored by DCAS, the annual Vision Zero Fleet Safety Forum brings together people representing federal, state, and city agencies, as well as private fleets, equipment suppliers, non-profits, and universities, for the common goal of vehicle safety.
