Akron Public Schools (APS) proudly announced on May 11, 2026, the expansion of its long-running partnership with The University of Akron (UA), naming the institution as a sister university to North High School. This announcement builds on the strong relationship between APS and UA, which includes established partnerships with NIHF STEM High School, Ellet High School, Akron Early College and other APS programs. Together, these efforts are designed to broaden opportunities for students through enhanced academic support, expanded college readiness resources, and career-connected learning experiences.
As a sister university, The University of Akron will work closely with North High School to develop career-focused classroom instruction and hands-on, problem-based learning opportunities. The university will also help implement college admission test preparation programs, offer summer enrichment experiences, and provide valuable workshops for students and families navigating the college application process. Together, APS and UA aim to create a seamless pathway from high school to higher education, equipping students with the tools and support needed for long-term success.
"We are grateful for The University of Akron and their commitment to deepen opportunities available to our students," said Superintendent Mary Outley. "By becoming a sister university to North High School, we are building on a proven foundation that already supports students at NIHF STEM, Ellet, and Akron Early College. Together, we are creating clearer pathways to college, careers, and long-term success."
"North High School students are talented future professionals who deserve a clear path to a career, and that path runs right through The University of Akron," said UA President R.J. Nemer. "These students are the next generation's nurses, engineers, scientists and much more. At UA, we believe the key is to start early, stay connected and make sure students see themselves in higher education before they ever fill out an application. This city is on the rise, and we need these students to recognize their potential role in building what comes next."
The collaboration between Akron Public Schools and The University of Akron was formed with the help of United Way of Summit & Medina. United Way serves as a link between the College and Career Academies of Akron and local businesses, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students and strengthening the education-to-employment pipeline in Summit County.
"We're proud to serve as the connectors in this work and help create meaningful opportunities for students." said Annie McFadden, President & CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina. "By strengthening a partnership between the University of Akron and Akron Public Schools, students can not only explore pathways to advanced curriculum and higher education, but also do so with a nationally ranked university in their own backyard."
APS was designated a Ford Next Generation Learning Community in May 2017. Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is supporting the transformation of public high schools into career-themed academies to better prepare students for college and professional success in today's competitive global economy. College and Career Academies of Akron are supported by the following key strategic partners: Akron Community Foundation, ConxusNEO, Greater Akron Chamber, GAR Foundation, Summit Education Initiative, and United Way of Summit & Medina.
