SPRINGFIELD - The Dana-Thomas House State Historic Site in Springfield will host The Beauty in Our Community, a student art exhibit created in partnership with Compass for Kids' Camp Compass, beginning July 10.
The exhibit features artwork created by Camp Compass students in first through fifth grades. Camp Compass is a summer enrichment program operated by Compass for Kids that provides students with educational and creative learning opportunities during the summer months.
Inspired by the Japanese art movement Ukiyo-e, or the floating world, students were invited to paint scenes depicting what they find beautiful or meaningful about Springfield. Their artwork highlights favorite people, places, books, movies and other experiences that celebrate the community.
Ukiyo-e flourished during Japan's Edo period and portrayed scenes from everyday life, celebrating the culture of the growing merchant class. Both Susan Lawrence Dana and architect Frank Lloyd Wright collected Ukiyo-e prints, connecting the exhibit to the Dana-Thomas House.
The public is invited to an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 10. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served in the courtyard during the reception.
