Securityplus Federal Credit Union joined forces with the Baltimore Hunger Project this Thanksgiving to ensure thousands of local families had everything they needed for a meaningful holiday meal.
On Friday, November 21, a team of Securityplus employee volunteers helped review and prepare more than 2,500 full Thanksgiving meal bags, part of one of the region's largest grassroots food relief efforts.
This impactful initiative, now in its fifth year, was organized by the Baltimore Hunger Project and supported by dozens of volunteers and community partners. The meal bags weren't just basic groceries. Each one included everything needed to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner: stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, cornbread mix, pumpkin pie ingredients, pantry staples, and even roasting pans. Each bag accompanied one of the 1,700 donated turkeys to provide families with a complete and dignified holiday meal.
The distribution effort served families connected to all 66 of the Baltimore Hunger Project's partner schools in Baltimore City and Baltimore County, as well as organizations including Heaven on Earth Now, Southwest Sports & Fitness Alliance, and St. Joseph's Parish.
"Our employees were grateful for the opportunity to help ensure families had everything they needed for the holiday," said Jack Schiefer, VP of Security & Facilities and Securityplus Volunteer Team Lead. "Seeing how many meals were prepared and where they were headed really underscored the impact this project has on our community."
For families facing food insecurity, especially students who rely on school meals during the academic year, the holiday break can be a time of uncertainty. That's why the Baltimore Hunger Project mobilizes every year to fill the gap with compassion, care, and critical resources.
"These Thanksgiving bags give families the chance to sit down to a full, dignified holiday meal," said Lynne Kahn, Executive Director of the Baltimore Hunger Project. "We want every child to feel the comfort and stability of sharing Thanksgiving at home."
This year's meal distribution marked the organization's largest Thanksgiving effort to date, made possible by the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners like Securityplus.
Creating a Ripple Effect of Compassion
As part of its broader community impact mission, Securityplus continues to invest in local efforts that provide immediate support while building long-term financial and emotional well-being. The partnership with the Baltimore Hunger Project exemplifies how local organizations can work together to deliver more than meals-they deliver hope, dignity, and connection.
Securityplus encourages everyone to get involved and continue the momentum:
A Holiday Meal, A Powerful Message
At Securityplus, every volunteer hour and every act of service reflects our core belief: banking should be about more than money, it should be about people. By helping bring Thanksgiving to over 2,500 families this year, we're proud to stand behind that belief in action.
"This effort is more than food, it's about delivering stability and showing families that they're seen and supported," said Schiefer. "It's the kind of work that reminds us all why community partnerships matter."
