New GFR fire engine arrives at Station 1

City of Gainesville leaders invite area neighbors to attend a dedication ceremony at Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) Station 1 for its newest firetruck, Engine 1. It is the city's second new engine in as many months.

When: 10-11 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 24

Where: 525 S. Main St., GFR Fire Station 1

Fire Station 1 houses three fire trucks. The new engine replaces one at the station which has averaged nearly 2,000 calls annually over five years. Engine 1 is capable of carrying 750 gallons of water and is equipped with specialized tools and equipment to support rapid intervention during emergency incidents. As an Advanced Life Support vehicle, Engine 1 is deployed with state-certified emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

During the event, neighbors will have the opportunity to help GFR firefighters push the new truck into the station bay. The tradition dates to the era before motorized vehicles, when placing hand-drawn hose carts and horse-drawn steam engines into the firehouse required a hands-on approach.
