Mike Butherus served many roles within U.S. Department of Energy Complex
June 25, 2026Office of Legacy Management Support Partner (LMSP) Mike Butherus has retired after a 45-year career within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) complex.
Butherus was the LMSP site lead for the Energy-Related Health Research (LEHR), California Site and led the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) team. His time supporting DOE in the Grand Junction Office in Colorado began as a three-year commitment during the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) cleanup project.
Throughout his career, Butherus had many significant roles. From 1988-1996, he served as project manager/program manager for the Denver Radium Superfund Project, and director of Denver/Utah and decontamination and decommissioning operations. From 1996-2002, he was manager of Projects and Programs.
He joined LMSP at its very beginning in 2003 as manager of Programs and Projects, and later, manager of Beneficial Reuse and Property Management. Before his current role, he supported Asset Management.
Most recently, he has been the LEHR site lead and provided CERCLA support and mentorship for LMSP. Butherus said his proudest accomplishments were the successful remediation of the Monticello (Utah) CERCLA sites and the Denver Radium Superfund Project being recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters as the National Superfund Project of the Year in 1990.
In retirement, his plans include joining a gym, resuming golf, and spending more time on the Oregon coast. He'll also make time to assist his wife, Julie, with her passion for trapping, spaying or neutering, and releasing feral cats.
