EPA Removes Hundreds of Drums, Completes Cleanup at Former Compounders Site in Howell Township, New Jersey

Howell Township, N.J. - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has completed its cleanup work in Howell Township, New Jersey, removing more than 600 drums and approximately 1,380 containers, demolishing seven storage tanks, and addressing contamination that posed potential risks to the surrounding community. EPA conducted this work under its emergency removal authority, which allows the agency to quickly address immediate environmental risks.

"Leaking containers, unsecured access, and a fire at the site raised clear concerns for the community. EPA worked with local and state officials to ensure that the community was kept informed and was protected throughout the cleanup," said EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci. "EPA removed those hazards and stabilized the property so it can be managed safely and possibly repurposed moving forward."

Firefighters first identified hazards at the site in February 2023, when they found materials burning inside a large steel structure, along with deteriorating drums, chemical odors, spills, and unsecured conditions across the property. State and county agencies requested EPA assistance. EPA's subsequent assessment confirmed leaking containers, improperly stored materials, and widespread contamination risks, prompting cleanup to remove hazardous substances and secure the site.

EPA removed drums and containers holding materials such as asphalt, roofing tar, adhesives, and solvents. Many of the materials met federal criteria for hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, including flammable and combustible substances, corrosives, metals, and other toxic compounds. EPA also demolished and disposed of seven former production tanks and removed surface soil impacted by historic chemical spills.

EPA has assessed the site and determined that no additional Superfund cleanup is needed at this time. With immediate risks addressed, the agency will return oversight to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. EPA will continue working closely with state and local officials to ensure future site use is consistent with authorized land use.
