Wayne State welcomes more than 24,000 students, including largest first-year class in history

New student enrollment rises 3% as Wayne State marks strongest total enrollment since 2021

Wayne State University welcomes the largest group of first-year students in its 158-year history this fall. When classes began Aug. 31, there were 3,247 full-time first year students registered - an increase of 5% over last year's incoming class. Among this record-setting class, more than half are first-generation college students - underscoring Wayne State's role as an engine for social mobility and opportunity.

The historic first-year class is part of continued enrollment growth at WSU, which welcomed more than 24,000 students to campus this fall, including approximately 7,000 new first-year, transfer, graduate and professional students.

New student enrollment increased by 3% over last fall, putting Wayne State on track for the university's strongest total enrollment since 2021. The continued growth reflects the university's efforts to expand access to higher education and student success initiatives. Wayne State also welcomed more than 2,800 students to campus housing, marking the highest housing occupancy since before the pandemic.

"There's an incredible energy on campus as we welcome so many new and returning students to Wayne State this fall," said Richard A. Bierschbach, president of Wayne State University. "These talented and ambitious students are pursuing their goals at one of the nation's premier public research universities, and we're proud that so many see Wayne State and Detroit as the place to build strong futures. Our students bring new ideas, perspectives and energy to our community, and we're excited to see what they will accomplish as Warriors."

Wayne State has the lowest tuition of Michigan's four major research universities, while serving families on average with the fewest financial resources. An estimated 60% of incoming first-year students will pay no tuition or fees through a combination of university, state, federal and other financial aid. Wayne State offers numerous institutional aid programs, and 87% of students receive some form of financial aid.

"Wayne State works hard to connect with talented, driven prospective students and eliminate financial barriers, which allows us to foster enrollment success," Dr. Charles Cotton III, vice provost for strategic enrollment, said. "Our continued enrollment growth is the result of a year-round effort by our campus community. Whether it's visiting area high schools, providing meaningful orientation experiences, or clearing up confusion about admissions and financial aid, we are there for prospective students and their families."

The excitement around the start of the semester came to life during Warrior Welcome Week, as thousands of students, faculty and staff gathered for Convocation, FestiFall, the Warrior Pride 5K Run/Walk, Block Party and more. Designed to help foster a sense of community and belonging, the curated activities help students start the year feeling connected and prepared for success - support that continues long after Welcome Week ends.

"Fall is always an exciting time on campus as we welcome a growing number of students to Wayne State, but we know this is just the beginning," said Dr. Christina L. Bloebaum, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. "Our responsibility is to provide each student with the support and opportunities they need to thrive. From their first day of classes and all the way through to graduation and into their careers, we want every Warrior to know that we are invested in their success."
