FEMA Announces Additional $45 Million for North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - FEMA announced an additional $45 million approved this week for more than 40 recovery and mitigation projects to help North Carolina communities recover from Hurricane Helene and past disasters.

Notable recovery projects FEMA funded include:

  • $19.3 million to North Carolina Emergency Management for debris removal efforts.
  • $8.8 million to North Carolina Department of Transportation for debris removal, emergency protective measures and road repairs.
  • $1.6 million to Lake Lure to repair utilities, roads and bridges.
  • $1.5 million to the Town of Montreat to repair roads and bridges.
  • $1.5 million to Watauga County Schools for management costs.
  • $1.5 million to Asheville Christian Academy to repair their main soccer field.
  • $1.2 million to Black Mountain to repair the pedestrian bridge on Oak Park Trail.
  • $1.1 million to The Cathedral of All Souls for emergency protective measures.
  • $1.1 million to Yancey County for emergency protective measures and repairs to water control facilities.

FEMA is reimbursing North Carolina at no less than a 90% federal share for Hurricane Helene Public Assistance recovery projects, an enhanced level of support reserved for the most significant disasters.

Additionally, FEMA approved $919,000 for the state of North Carolina to acquire and demolish properties in Transylvania County that were damaged by Helene. The properties will be converted into permanent open space to help prevent, eliminate or reduce future disaster damage. FEMA is funding this mitigation project at no less than a 75% federal cost share through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
