US Representative Rosa DeLauro issued the following statement regarding news that the Supreme Court has ruled by a 6-3 margin that President Trump's blanket tariffs applied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act are unconstitutional:
"These tariffs raised prices. People in America are suffering every day from the cost of living crisis--they are living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to pay the bills. Inflation is killing them. And President Trump's tariffs were pouring gasoline on the fire, raising the cost of everything from coffee to kitchen cabinets. Americans paid 90 percent of the cost of these tariffs last year, totaling nearly $1,800 in additional costs on average for each family. These were extreme price hikes that families could not afford, and which empowered big corporations to price gouge.
"Now the Supreme Court has ruled: the president has no authority to do this. It is a relief for American families who were suffering from higher prices due to his trade war.
"It is now up to Congress to overhaul our trade policies and lower the cost of living. Tariffs have a role in ensuring a level playing field with other countries, but they must not be used in a blanket manner that raises prices. As leader of the House Democratic Trade Working Group, I am ready to work with anyone to tackle the cost of living crisis and protect American workers, not multinational corporations."
