Atrium Health Invests $2.38B in Community Benefit Across North Carolina

Expanding access to care and supporting patients through financial assistance and community-based services

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 21, 2026 - Atrium Health invested $2.38 billion in community benefit in 2025 - more than $6 million each day - reflecting its continued commitment to supporting patients and communities across North Carolina.

"At Atrium Health, caring for our communities extends beyond providing quality, compassionate care within our walls," said Steve Smoot, EVP and president of the North Carolina and Georgia division at Advocate Health, of which Atrium Health is a part. "It means addressing the barriers that can stand between a person and their health, whether that's housing, transportation or access to care close to home. Through strong community partnerships and investments where they matter most, we remain committed to supporting patients and their families with the resources and services they need."

Atrium Health is part of Advocate Health, the third-largest nonprofit health system in the United States and one of the nation's leading providers of community benefit. The North Carolina investment represents a portion of Advocate Health's $6.27 billion in community benefit in 2025. Since its formation in 2022, Advocate Health has reported more than $24 billion in community benefit.

Atrium Health also supports its communities by providing free and discounted care for patients with limited financial resources, as well as delivering undercompensated care for those covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

Across the communities it serves, Atrium Health directs its community benefit investments toward improving access to care, supporting physical and behavioral health, and addressing basic needs such as food and housing.

This work brings care closer to home and supports patients both inside and outside traditional care settings through:

• Community-based programs, including school-based virtual care services that expanded to 240 schools in 2025 and provided care to more than 8,200 students. More than 60% of visits allowed students to remain in school rather than miss class.
• Access to affordable care for vulnerable populations, including more than 375,000 Medicaid patients served - the highest Medicaid patient volume of any health system in North Carolina - and nearly 100,000 North Carolinians who received free care through Atrium Health's financial assistance policy.
• Career exploration and workforce development opportunities for nearly 300 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students, helping build pathways into future health care careers.
