NNSA issues final NEPA documents on Enhanced Plutonium Facility Utilization project

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) made available on its website, the final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) and Amended Record of Decision (AROD), for Enhanced Plutonium Facility Utilization at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) .

The project will increase the amount of fissile materials for research and development (R&D) operations at the Plutonium Facility. This will allow NNSA to conduct the research necessary to support NNSA's science-based stewardship of the nuclear weapons stockpile.

The documents explain NNSA's decisions and provide a summary of potential environmental impacts associated with the change.

In addition to allowing an increase in R&D, the project will upgrade the security categorization of the Plutonium Facility; enhance infrastructure, including security; increase materials shipments; and add personnel.
