Long Beach, CA -- The City of Long Beach Department of Public Works invites community members to attend a community meeting to learn more about the 10th Street Greenbelt Project, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Recreation Park Community Center (4900 E. 7th St.)
The 10th Street Greenbelt, located between 8th and 10th streets and bounded by Termino and Grand avenues is part of a vision plan to transform the larger greenbelt that stretches from 4th Street to 10th Street. Originally part of the historic Pacific Electric Red Car rail line, the corridor was repurposed into recreational open space through the 2014 Pacific Electric Right-of-Way Vision Plan, with the 10th Street Greenbelt area opening for public use in 2016.
At the meeting, City staff will share the final design that has been informed by continued collaboration with the community, particularly the Greenbelt Heights Neighborhood Association. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the next phase of improvements, which are planned to begin construction by early 2027 and be completed by fall 2027, barring weather and unforeseen conditions. Interpretation services in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog are available upon request by Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The first phase of improvements to the 10th Street Greenbelt, funded by Measure A, were completed in 2022 and included formalizing a heavily used dirt trail with approximately 900 linear feet of new walkway, replacing rolling entry gates, and adding bollards to enhance pedestrian safety. This second phase of improvements will develop the site into a welcoming open space and community amenity with the installation of native, drought-tolerant trees and landscaping, irrigation, new decomposed granite spur trails off the main path, pathway lighting, seating and gathering areas and new signage..
As part of the City Council approved Fiscal Year 2026 Capital Improvement Program, the project received an additional $630,000 to support detailed design for the overall renovation and enhancement of the Greenbelt. In October 2025, the City submitted an application for a $1.5 million grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District under the Natural Lands, Local Beaches Water Conservation and Protection Program to help fully fund the project, which was awarded in March 2026.
This project is part of Elevate '28, a comprehensive five-year infrastructure investment plan aimed at revitalizing parks and community facilities while improving accessibility and multimodal transportation throughout Long Beach. For more information about Elevate '28, visit lbelevate28.com.
