MALDEN, MA - Today, Katie Gorka, U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education, visited Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (MVRCS) as part of the Department of Education's national History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour, in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday. The tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles.
Three hundred students in ninth through twelfth grade participated in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics and the important role Massachusetts has played in our nation's history. The event opened with remarks from MVRCS Director/Superintendent Alex Dan and Assistant Superintendent Chris Finn, followed by Gorka. The event centered around civic engagement, patriotism, and the shared responsibility of citizenship.
"Few places can claim a deeper connection to the founding of the United States than Massachusetts," said U.S. Department of Education Senior Advisor for Civic Education Katie Gorka. "Events like History Rocks! give students the chance to experience our nation's history in a tangible way. When young people engage with the ideas and debates that shaped our country, they see that the American story is not finished, and they understand that they have a role in writing its next chapter."
