New 471 area code coming to the Mississippi 662 area code region

New 471 area code coming to the Mississippi 662 area code region

October 28, 2025

TDS Telecommunications LLC (TDS®) is sharing information about upcoming changes to phone numbers and dialing procedures for its Myrtle, Slate Springs, Calhoun City, and Vardaman-area customers.

To ensure a continuing supply of new telephone numbers, the Mississippi Public Service Commission has approved an all-services area code overlay for the 662 area code, which serves communities that include but are not limited to Southaven, Tupelo, Greenwood, Greenville, Oxford, Horn Lake, Starkville, Columbus, Corinth, and Memphis as well as many other smaller communities. The new 471 area code will serve the same geographic area currently served by the existing 662 area code.

The process of adding a second area code to a geographic region is known as an area code overlay. When an overlay occurs, customers are required to dial the area code and the 7-digit telephone number to complete local calls.

Existing phone numbers will not change due to this overlay. The price of local calling, or other rates and services, also will not change. Customers still dial 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 and 811 where available.

When will the change begin?

Beginning January 30, 2026, all local calls made within the 662 area code must be dialed using 10 digits (area code + the 7-digit telephone number). On and after this date, calls using only 7 digits will not be completed and will be routed to an announcement.

Also starting on January 30, 2026, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the 471 area code. The new 471 area code will co-exist everywhere in this region with the 662 area code. Anyone receiving a 471 number will be required to dial 10 digits as well.

What do you need to do?

  • Dial the area code + telephone number for all local calls, including calls within the same area code starting January 30, 2026
  • Include the area code when giving your phone number to friends, family, business associates and customers, etc.
  • Ensure all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of technology are reprogrammed to include the area code and to recognize the new 471 area code as a valid area code. Some examples include life-safety systems and medical monitoring devices, fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, cordless and mobile phone contact lists, fax machines, call forwarding settings, and voicemail services. Any needed reprogramming must be done between before January 30, 2026.
  • Update websites, personal and business stationery and checks, advertising materials, personal and pet ID tags, and other such items to ensure the area code is included.

What will remain the same?

  • Your telephone number, including current area code, will not change.
  • The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
  • What is a local call now will remain a local call.
  • Continue to dial 10 digits for local calls within and between the overlay area code, and 1+10 digits for long distance calls.
  • You can still dial just three digits to reach 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 or 811 if those are currently available in your community.
