Parliament, Wednesday, 24 June 2026 - The Portfolio Committee on Police will tomorrow visit Mooiplaas Informal Settlements in Pretoria to assess services provided by the South African Police Services (SAPS). The visit follows a motion passed by the National Assembly on 4 November 2025 over concerns about the high rate of serious crime in the area and the inability by the SAPS to combat crime.
"Following the initial meeting held with the SAPS on the motion, the committee was concerned by the apparent breakdown in trust between the community and the Erasmia police station. The committee noted that a trust relationship was necessary for collaboration in combating crime. It is important that the committee visits the area to receive comprehensive inputs from all stakeholders," said Mr Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of the committee.
Furthermore, the committee raise concerns about allegations that SAPS officers attached to the Erasmia police station, who reportedly own rental properties, have neglected their official duties and allegedly used state resources to conduct private business activities. The committee's concerns are premised on the fact that the measures implemented by the SAPS were inadequate to ascertain the veracity of the claim. Also, SAPS members moonlighting in private business creates a problem of legitimacy in the eyes of the public. These concerns will be raised during the visit.
The committee will interact with the management of SAPS from national office to local station, members of the Community Police Forum, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, the City of Tshwane and community members of Mooiplaas informal settlements.
