A homicide suspect is jailed without bond following Thursday night's fatal shooting of a 42-year-old man in an apartment complex on Old Franklin Road. The investigation, led by Homicide Unit detectives, shows this to be a case of mistaken identity.
Detectives determined a domestic dispute was transpiring in the parking lot between Dorian Brooks, 22, and his girlfriend as she was moving out of his apartment. During the dispute, Brooks' girlfriend stated she was going to have her ex-boyfriend pick her up as, coincidentally, the 42-year-old was driving into the parking lot at the same time. In an interview with detectives, Brooks admitted to shooting at the 42-year-old's vehicle as it came by them without seeing who was inside.
Brooks then fled into his apartment where witnesses directed officers upon their arrival. The handgun used in the shooting was recovered next to a tree in the back of the apartment building.
The 42-year-old was not connected to Brooks or his girlfriend. He was located in the parking lot beside his car with multiple gunshot wounds and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.
Brooks was charged Friday morning with criminal homicide.
