Gardeners Encouraged to Plant and Share Produce to Feed Local Families

Published on April 27, 2026

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) today urged home and community gardeners to plant and share surplus garden produce with local hunger-relief organizations and help feed neighbors experiencing hunger as part of its Plant for Hunger campaign.

"As spring gardening begins, we're encouraging residents to dedicate a small portion of their garden to growing extra fruits, vegetables or herbs that can later be donated to local food pantries and meal sites," said Rachel Redepenning, LLCHD Public Health Educator.

During the growing season, many gardeners find themselves with more produce than they can use, often while food pantries struggle to source enough fresh fruits and vegetables to keep up with demand. To fill this gap, gardeners can locate nearby food pantries on AmpleHarvest.org, then share their extra produce for neighbors to put to good use.

Redepenning said benefits of the Plant for Hunger campaign include:

  • Increased access to fresh, healthy food for families experiencing food insecurity
  • Maintains fresh produce in local food pantries
  • Reduced food waste from home gardens
  • Support for existing and new gardeners that strengthens the local food system
  • Encourages community generosity and connection

All gardeners are encouraged to donate their excess produce and those who cannot garden are invited to help promote the campaign. Find local food pantries that welcome fresh produce donations at AmpleHarvest.org. Hunger-relief organizations interested in receiving donations can also register on the website.
