The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that a new traffic pattern will be implemented on I-91 southbound in Hartford as part of the bridge rehabilitation work currently in progress on Bridge 1469B (Dutch Point Viaduct). The Stage 2 traffic pattern includes a work zone in the center lane of I-91 southbound beginning just after Exit 29A (Capitol Area) and continuing for approximately 0.33 miles south to the Colt Building. Motorists traveling on I-91 southbound will be split into two lanes, one on either side of the center lane work zone. Advance warning signage will be in place to assist motorists through the work zone. The traffic pattern will be in place for approximately four months.
Project 0063-0726 consists of the replacement of the bridge deck, joints, membrane and overlay, parapets and roadway lighting on Bridge No. 01469B as well as roadway improvements and related appurtenances. The project also includes superstructure strengthening as required to increase load carrying capacity to accommodate all Connecticut legal, permit, and emergency vehicle loads. The superstructure will be rehabilitated, and spot painted (or metallized) and the bridge bearings will be rehabilitated or replaced as required. Substructure strengthening and retrofitting are also included as required to increase its load rating.
CTDOT Project No. 0063-0726 was awarded to J.F. White Contracting, Inc. at a cost of $70,544,422.00 and is scheduled to be completed in June of 2027. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 1 in Rocky Hill.
LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
The project includes a long-term closure of one (1) of the three (3) lanes of I-91 southbound through the work zone for the duration of the project and will be constructed in three (3) stages. With Stage 1 construction now complete, Stage 2 work will now close the center lane and split the remaining two lanes of traffic onto either side of the work area.
The State Street on-ramp to I-91 southbound at the Founders Bridge will remain closed for the duration of the project to facilitate the temporary traffic patterns on I-91 southbound during staged construction. Detours are posted.
Temporary lane closures are also expected to continue on I-91 southbound during the project from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am.
Temporary daytime lane closures are also expected on the Whitehead Highway ramps to and from I-91 northbound during the project from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Traffic control signing patterns, along with State Troopers during temporary lane and shoulder closures as needed will guide motorists through the work zone.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
