Position and Department:

Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement

How long have you worked at FSU?

17.5 years

What 3 words can you use to describe FSU?

Frostburg State University is innovative, engaging, and supportive.

List any professional or personal accomplishments we can celebrate with you.

While I am grateful for the awards I have received for my accomplishments, I would say the most important thing is the people. Over the past 17 and a half years, it has been a privilege to work with dedicated students, staff and faculty who believe in creating positive experiences for students. Together, we have been able to bring concerts, comedy shows, and events such as Late at Lane to Frostburg State University.

What is your favorite thing about working at Frostburg State University?

My favorite part of working at Frostburg State University is the students. Programs such as the Leadership Retreat, Alternative Winter Break trip, and the Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership provide great opportunities to connect with students beyond the classroom and help support them as our future leaders.

Is there a faculty and/or staff member that you consider a mentor? If so, who and why?

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with many faculty and staff members whom I consider mentors and who have been supportive of my professional journey. While there are far too many to name, those who were present at the very beginning and continue to be sources of encouragement and guidance include Robin Wynder '80/M'87, Dr. Diane Blankenship, and William Mandicott. I am also grateful and thankful for the support of my wife, Dr. Latisha Cooper D'24, whose encouragement, listening ear, and keeps me grounded personally and professionally.

What advice would you give to current students?

My advice to current students is to get involved and network. Frostburg State University offers opportunities from gaining work experience in the Lane University Center, to event planning through the University Programming Council, to Student Government Association, or involvement in a fraternity, sorority, or student organization.

What is a cause near and dear to your heart and why?

A cause that is important to me is cancer awareness. My grandfather passed away due to cancer, and I have also watched several people close to me battle the disease. Through these experiences, I have seen the profound impact it has on caregivers and families who stand beside their loved ones.

What do you do for fun?

For fun when I have time, I enjoy watching television series and discussing the outcomes with friends and colleagues. Several of us in the office have watched such shows as Stranger Things and Survivor, which have led to some great conversations. I also enjoy reading a good book, mostly on leadership topics.
