Today, Gov. Jeff Landry visited FEMA headquarters in Washington, D.C. and the National Response Coordination Center to meet with FEMA leadership and federal partners, receive briefings on ongoing operations and coordinate requests for federal support.
"I want to thank President Trump and Secretary Noem for their constant support and communication throughout this process," Gov. Landry said. "I am here and in constant contact with FEMA officials to make sure that our efforts are coordinated to help Louisianians recover from this historic winter weather storm."
During his visit, Gov. Landry also met with Karen S. Evans, the senior official performing the duties of the FEMA administrator, and the associate administrator of FEMA's Office of Response and Recovery Gregg Phillips to discuss both the current winter storm response and ongoing recovery from prior disasters.
Under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Noem, FEMA and its federal partners continue supporting Louisiana's state-led response to the severe winter storm that disrupted critical transportation routes and threatened public safety across the state.
After severe freezing rain made Interstate 20 difficult for traffic to pass through, FEMA facilitated support from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help Louisiana receive sand and other road-treatment resources to the corridor - improving traffic flow on the interstate and keeping critical response operations moving within 24 hours.
FEMA also staged critical resources in Louisiana and other states impacted by the storm, allowing states to access critical commodities in case state supplies were diminished. FEMA staged 500 generators, more than 700,000 meals, 1.1 million liters of water, 4,600 blankets and 3,500 cots, as well as medical supply kits and other critical commodities at federal staging areas within impacted states. To date, FEMA has provided supplemental commodities to the state and helped install 13 generators to provide emergency power to critical facilities in Louisiana.
"Under Secretary Noem's leadership, FEMA was prepared and ready to support Louisiana and other states throughout the Southeast long before the storm came," Evans said. "Working side by side with Governor Landry, we pre-positioned commodities, deployed staff to the state Emergency Operations Center, coordinated closely with federal partners to help keep critical infrastructure open and ensured that federal resources could flow quickly to the state. We will remain engaged with Louisiana for as long as it takes to support response and recovery efforts."
In addition to supporting the current storm response, Secretary Noem recently approved $529,403,109 in FEMA Public Assistance funding for Louisiana. This funding, covering 165 projects, will reimburse communities for disaster recovery costs tied to rebuilding public infrastructure and emergency protective measures from past disasters, underscoring the Trump administration's commitment to helping communities in Louisiana and across the nation.
