Watch her Remarks HERE
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, on the fourth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) hosted a press call to discuss ongoing anti-choice efforts to restrict access to abortion, and her efforts to fight for women's reproductive rights. In May, Senator Rosen joined colleagues in introducing a resolution affirming mifepristone as safe and effective, and helped lead the introduction of a bill to overturn the Trump Administration's block on foreign aid for reproductive and maternal health care programs. Senator Rosen also introduced a resolution to overturn the Trump Administration's ban on abortion counseling and reproductive care for veterans.
Below is a Transcript of Senator Rosen's Remarks:
"Today is a dark day because it is the four year anniversary since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, opening the door to abortion bans by anti-choice extremists.
"Fourteen states immediately enacted total abortion bans following the Dobbs decision, and many more have made it harder for women to access care since then.
"Even at the federal level, an extreme bill to ban abortion nationally has been introduced - but it has gone nowhere because Democrats have held strong in opposing it.
"Unfortunately, since Donald Trump came back into office, his Administration has used all the tools at their disposal to intensify the extreme attacks on women's freedom to choose what happens to their own bodies, our own bodies.
"Trump's FDA is conducting a politically motivated review of mifepristone, a common abortion medication that has been used safely and effectively for decades.
"At the end of last year, Donald Trump's VA implemented a near-total abortion ban, blocking women veterans from accessing abortion care even in the case of rape, the case of incest, or in the case of health emergencies, preventing the VA from even telling a woman who has been raped where she can get help. Shameful.
"When Senate Democrats tried to overturn this ban, Republicans voted to uphold it.
"And just yesterday, Washington Republicans were on the Senate floor trying to pass bills that would restrict women's access to health care everywhere.
"So just think about it. As folks across this country struggle to make ends meet, struggle to afford health insurance as a result of Washington Republicans' cuts, those same Washington Republicans are spending their time, instead of helping families build homes, they're trying to make it even harder for women to access health care.
"Anti-choice extremists have made it clear that they'll stop at nothing to ban abortion. But we won't let them.
"Because let's be clear: abortion bans are fatal.
"In the years since Dobbs, we've seen tragic, preventable cases where women died after being denied care following a miscarriage because doctors were afraid of being prosecuted for simply doing their job.
"Right now, one third of American women live in a state with an abortion ban. While we keep working to restore the protections of Roe nationwide, we have to make sure those women can still access care.
"That's why I've joined my colleagues, including Senator Cortez Masto, in introducing a bill to protect women's right to travel to get the care they need.
"Nevada is a firmly pro-choice state, and Nevadans overwhelmingly agree that women and their doctors - not politicians - should have the freedom to decide when and how to start a family.
"That's why Nevadans overwhelmingly voted to permanently enshrine reproductive freedom in our state constitution in 2024.
"But the fight to protect that freedom isn't over.
"As Washington Republicans have made clear this week, they will keep trying to use every tool at their disposal to ban abortion at the national level. It will cost women their lives.
As long as I'm in the Senate, Nevadans can count on me to defend every woman's right to make her own health care decisions."
