PROVIDENCE, RI - Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:
"I have seen the horrific video of another fatal ICE shooting. A thorough investigation is needed, but it is clear that ICE agents are doing more harm than good in Minneapolis at this point. They aren't effectively doing their jobs or keeping Americans safe - they are endangering people.
"I will not vote to proceed to the House passed minibus appropriations bill due to the House's failure to reform ICE. The agency, under President Trump's chaotic guidance, is doing damage to America's ideals, our communities, and law enforcement.
"I stand ready to immediately pass the other bills in this package by unanimous consent next week and provide short term funding for DHS so the Senate can fully debate and vote on common sense reforms to ICE that bolster the rule of law.
"Like every American, I support a secure border, but we do not want an unchecked agency that appears to believe it is above the law, randomly detains American citizens, and incites rather than protects.
"Indeed, the Senate should consider and vote on several reforms including: providing and requiring body cameras for ICE personnel, end ICE raids in churches, hospitals, and schools, demand court issued warrants as the constitution requires, improve the training of ICE personnel to prevent needless violence and chaos, as well as require officers to display clear, legible identification with their name or badge number and agency."
