Full closure of Farrington Highway near Old Fort Weaver Road Beginning Monday September 14

HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies the public of the 24/7 full closure of Farrington Highway between the east and west ends of Old Fort Weaver Road begining on Monday, September 14. The closure is necessary for the reconstruction of the Honouliuli Bridge. The estimated 24/7 closure will extend for a year, detouring to Old Fort Weaver Road.

The closure is part of the Farrington Highway Widening project, which runs from Fort Weaver Road to Kapolei Golf Course, near the University of Hawaii-West Oʻahu. The widening project will take the two-lane highway to three lanes, with the center lane being a two-way turn lane. The project additionally will add bike lanes and pdestrian sidewalks on both sides, from Kapolei to ʻEwa.

The scope of the project will include reconstruction of the Kaloʻi Stream Bridge and the Honoululi Stream Bridge. This part of the project is the reconstruction of the Honouliuli Stream Bridge and will require a temporary move of some HECO utility poles and a 36" waterline, so drilling can take place. The crew will be working on the mauka side of the bridge first, then the makai side. Concrete support blocks measuring 14' long x 14' wide x 7.5' tall will be constructed and essentially take up the entire width of the highway.

The full closure of Farrington Highway will result in cost savings of $500,000. The project began on May 1, 2025 with an estimated completion in April 2028. The total cost of the project is $138 million with the City and County of Honolulu committing $15 million toward construction.

The bus stop on the affected portion of Farrington Highway will be relocated to Old Fort Weaver Road during the closure.
