ST. LOUIS - Drivers who use Route 100 in Franklin and western St. Louis counties should be aware of traffic changes that will impact making left turns onto Route 100 in several locations.
All work is weather permitting.
Starting Wednesday, September 10 after morning rush, crews will close the crossovers at Route 100 and Route T (St. Albans Road). To make a left from Route T or St. Albans Road onto Route 100, drivers will need to use the new J-turn. To turn from Route 100 to Route T or St. Albans Road, drivers will need to drive pass the crossover, take the U-turn, cross over to the right lane and then turn right onto the roadway. In addition, crews will close the crossover to turn left from Wild Horse Creek onto Route 100, and drivers will need to use the new J-turn to turn left onto the route. Drivers will be able to continue to turn left from Route 100 onto Wild Horse Creek.
Instead of crossing fast moving traffic lanes to make a left turn, drivers at a J-turn turn right in the same direction of traffic, merge into the left lane and then make a U-turn in the direction they intend to travel. Although drivers do have to travel slightly further to get where they want to go, using a J-turn can take the same or less time than waiting for a safe and appropriate gap to cross traffic. These J-turns are a safer alternative to a traditional four-lane highway intersection because they eliminate or greatly reduce right-angle crashes, which is the type of crash that causes the most fatal or serious injuries.
Work will continue along this corridor through late fall.
