City of Sparks Partnering in Two 9/11 25th Anniversary Commemorations

On Friday, September 11, the City of Sparks is partnering in two separate ceremonies to commemorate 25 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The cities of Sparks and Reno will host a 25th-anniversary remembrance ceremony at 5:30 a.m. at the Reno City Plaza.
The City of Sparks and the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza will host an anniversary Patriot Day commemoration at 9 a.m. at the Sparks Marina.

RENO, Nev. (Sept. 3, 2026) - The Cities of Reno and Sparks invite the community to attend a remembrance ceremony to mark the 25^th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

The 25^th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony for 9/11 will take place on Sept. 11, 2026 at 5:30 a.m. at Reno City Plaza located at 10 N. Virginia Street. The ceremony will honor the lives lost on that day, recognize the courage and sacrifice of first responders, and reflect on the resilience of the nation in the years since the terrorist attacks.

"It has been 25 years, but we continue to remember the lives forever changed by the events of September 11," said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. "On this day, we honor those we lost, recognize the incredible courage and sacrifice of the first responders, and take a moment as a community to come together and reflect on an event that changed our nation."

"Most of us can remember exactly where we were on Sept. 11, 2001. We will never forget the incredible shock and deep sadness we all felt. We will never forget the brave first responders who ran toward danger to help others. We will never forget the innocent lives lost and the many families forever changed," said Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson. "Although this 25th anniversary is a somber day, I hope we also remember how we as Americans came together in the days that followed to support and help one another."

The ceremony will include a performance of the National Anthem, proclamations from the Cities of Reno and Sparks, and a remembrance honoring all those who lost their lives on 9/11, including those aboard all four flights. The Reno and Sparks Police and Fire Departments will also participate in the ceremony, including their respective honor guards.

Bell-ringing ceremonies will mark the moments the first and second planes struck the World Trade Center, while the ceremony will also recognize and honor those aboard the two additional flights that crashed at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Community members will also be able to participate in a ceremonial flower tribute. The ceremony will conclude with a performance of "Taps" and "Amazing Grace."

Virtual Viewing Option:

There will be a virtual viewing option for community members who would like to watch the ceremony but are unable to attend in-person. A livestream will be available starting at 5:30 a.m.

Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza and City of Sparks to Host 25th Anniversary Patriot Day Commemoration

SPARKS, Nev. - The City of Sparks is partnering with the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza to host Northern Nevada's 25th Anniversary Patriot Day Commemoration on Friday,

Sept. 11, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza located at Sparks Marina.

The ceremony commemorates twenty-five years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, honoring the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost-including the passengers and crews aboard the four aircraft-as well as the courageous firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, military members, and all those who answered the call in service to our nation.

The ceremony will be emceed by Noah Bond of KOLO 8 News Now.

The keynote address will be given by Major General Ronald J. Bath, U.S. Air Force (Ret.). The program will also feature Councilwoman Charlene Bybee, retired American Airlines Flight

Attendant, who will share a personal remembrance connected to American Airlines Flight 11, providing a unique perspective on how September 11 forever changed the aviation industry, the airline community, and our nation.

Special proclamations from the City of Sparks and the City of Reno will recognize the

dedication and sacrifice of Northern Nevada's firefighters, law enforcement officers, and first responders.

Community members, veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders, students, civic organizations, and families are encouraged to attend this free public event.
