Mayor Mantello Announces Local Law Expanding Real Property Tax Exemption for Seniors and Residents with Disabilities
(Troy, NY) - Mayor Carmella R. Mantello announced a new Local Law amending Chapter 257 of the Troy City Code to expand eligibility for the City's Real Property Tax Exemption program for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.
The amendment increases the allowable annual income eligibility and establishes a new sliding scale of exemptions for homeowners, phasing out at $50,399.99. This change brings Troy's exemption limits in line with those proposed by the Rensselaer County Legislature for the 2026 assessment roll, ensuring consistency and fairness for residents across the county.
Previously, the City's income limit was capped at $40,000 without a sliding scale. That threshold excluded many seniors and disabled residents who, despite modest incomes, did not qualify for relief. The updated schedule will provide meaningful tax assistance to homeowners while phasing down gradually, offering more flexibility and support
.
"This law delivers real relief for Troy's seniors and residents living with disabilities who have been struggling with rising costs," said Mayor Carmella R. Mantello. "By updating our income limits and creating a fairer exemption schedule, we are making sure our most vulnerable neighbors can stay in their homes and maintain their quality of life. Matching Rensselaer County's standards also ensures consistency and continuity for those we serve."
The updated exemption schedule will take effect for the next assessment roll, providing eligible homeowners with expanded opportunities for tax savings. The City Council is scheduled to act on the local law during the October 2nd meeting.
