New Senior Visual Editor for International

We are very happy to announce that Sergio Peçanha has joined the International desk as a senior visual editor based in Washington. Sergio officially returns to The Times to lead graphics and multimedia coverage of the Americas, and he will work across regions to help shape the desk's broader strategy for visual journalism.

Sergio is a multitalented reporter, cartographer and illustrator. As a longtime member of the Graphics department, he produced some of our most distinctive approaches to international stories, including What I Saw in Syria , Walking in War's Path and The Land That Failed to Fail . He designed a memorable A1 graphic of bin Laden's compound the day after it was raided, and he collaborated with Metro on Underground Lives and How a Garden for the Poor Became a Playground for the Rich .

In 2019, Sergio joined The Washington Post as a graphics columnist and visual editor for the Opinions desk. He created delightful illustrated stories and helped create an editorial series, on how to revive America's downtowns, that won a Gerald Loeb award for commentary. Earlier this year, Sergio worked on The Times's Graphics desk in a role focused on editing graphics for reporter video.

Sergio began his career at O Globo in his hometown, Rio de Janeiro. He is a generous collaborator who makes the work of his colleagues better.
