After the storm: City crews put a stop to weather-related potholes

Winter storms wreak havoc on city streets, and the Transportation & Public Works (TPW) Department Street Operations team knows the work doesn't end after spending days prepping and treating roads around the clock.

Immediately following the recent winter event, City crews were already scouting the roads for problem areas and designing a plan of action.

An intense week of pothole repairs began Saturday, Feb. 7, and concluded on Friday, Feb. 13. The goal is to fill upwards of 100 potholes a day and address all those reported potholes that come in following the winter event.

"After a weather event, Street Operations will do a Pothole Roundup activity in which we provide additional resources to address immediate needs, resulting in filling 200-plus potholes per day," said Jamaal Wiggins, street operations supervisor in TPW.

In total, crews addressed 1,419 potholes and exceeded the goal.

What causes potholes?

They are caused in a variety of ways, including road wear, vehicle weight and, yes, weather.

Older areas of town with aged asphalt roads tend to be more problematic, but this was a citywide effort that spanned all council districts.

How to report them

Instead of swerving when you see them and driving on by, report those potholes. The city's Pothole Crew will fix them, usually within 48 hours.
