Felon Sent to Prison for More Than Four Years for Illegally Possessing a Gun

A man who illegally possessed a gun after multiple felony convictions was sentenced today to more than four years in federal prison.

Tyrecas Rakeem Matlock, age 35, from Waterloo, Iowa, received the prison term after an April 30, 2026, guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a felon.

At the guilty plea, Matlock admitted he possessed a Taurus 9mm caliber pistol after being convicted of multiple prior felonies including possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Matlock was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. Matlock was sentenced to 57 months' imprisonment. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.

Matlock is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dillan Edwards and investigated by the Floyd County Sheriff's Office.
