ALERT: Phone Scam Targeting Westerville Utility Customers

The City of Westerville has been alerted to fraudulent phone calls to Westerville utility customers in which the caller claims to represent the Electric Division or general Utility Billing operations. Fraudulent callers have requested personal information and demanded payment from customers.

PLEASE REMEMBER: The City of Westerville DOES NOT request credit card numbers over the phone.

The Westerville Division of Police (WPD) reminds community members to treat any unexpected contact requiring financial information as suspicious. Please also remember the following tips when conducting business over the phone:

  • Reputable organizations will not require advance payments. Even if you play the lottery or enter sweepstakes, be cautious if contacted. Make sure you understand the protocol of how winnings would be collected in the games you play.
  • Ask any unknown callers for specific information, including business name, mailing address, phone number, website and federal tax identification information. Then, contact the Better Business Bureau to confirm their existence and view any potential complaints.
  • Talk to other adult members in your family about any contacts made from unknown sources, particularly requesting payments or financial information.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you receive a suspicious call, email or letter, please contact the WPD non-emergency line at (614) 882-7444. Visit the WPD Scam Awareness page to learn more.
