(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) today announced the retirement of Mike Tringale, Senior Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs, following more than a decade of service to the association. CHPA also announced that Mary Leonard, current Executive Director of CHPA's Health In Hand Foundation, has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs, while continuing to lead the Foundation.
Joining CHPA in 2016, Tringale has played a central role in leading the association's communications and public affairs strategy during a significant period of legislative, regulatory, and public health activity impacting the healthcare industry. Throughout his tenure, he led CHPA communications and advocacy efforts on issues ranging from OTC monograph reform and dietary supplement policy to sustainability, medication safety, HSA/FSA eligibility, and ingredient-specific public affairs initiatives. He also provided leadership for CHPA's Public Affairs & Communications Committee, Dietary Supplement Communications Committee, and communications support for OTC medical device priorities and ingredient task groups.
Over the last several years, Tringale has pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in Evidence-Based Health Care at the University of Oxford and will now focus on completing his program and spending more time with his family.
"Mike has been an incredibly valued leader, colleague, and advocate for consumer healthcare throughout his time at CHPA," said CHPA President & CEO Scott Melville. "His strategic counsel, deep expertise, and steady leadership have helped guide the association through some of the industry's most important policy and public affairs challenges over the past decade. We are deeply grateful for Mike's contributions and wish him and his family all the very best in this next chapter."
Leonard, who joined CHPA in 2011, currently serves as Senior Vice President & Executive Director of CHPA's Health In Hand Foundation, the association's 501(c)(3) educational and charitable arm. In her expanded role as Senior Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs, Leonard will oversee CHPA's communications, media relations, and public affairs functions while continuing to lead the Foundation's consumer education initiatives.
Leonard brings two decades of experience in integrated communications, marketing strategy, public health education, and mission-driven leadership. She has led the expansion of Health In Hand's national consumer education initiatives with retail partners and community partners, advanced Health In Hand's digital authority as a trusted source of self-care education and continued to spearhead the Foundation's flagship campaigns Up and Away and Know Your Dose. In 2026, she was recognized as one of Mass Market Retailers' Women of Influence recipients.
"I'm honored to take on this expanded leadership role and continue advancing CHPA's mission to empower responsible self-care," said Leonard. "Communications and public affairs play an essential role in building trust, translating complex issues, and helping consumers, policymakers, stakeholders, and the media better understand the value of safe, effective, and accessible self-care products. I look forward to continuing to work alongside CHPA's talented team, member companies, and partners to elevate the role of self-care and support the consumers who rely on these products every day."
"Mary is an accomplished and highly respected leader whose experience spans communications strategy, marketing, stakeholder engagement, and nonprofit management," said Melville. "She has built impactful national consumer education initiatives, strengthened industry partnerships, and consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to CHPA's mission. Mary's unique combination of public health leadership and strategic consumer-focused vision make her exceptionally well-positioned to lead both CHPA's Communications & Public Affairs team and the Health In Hand Foundation into the future."
