DC Snow Team to Deploy on Monday Ahead of Forecasted Wintery Mix

(Washington, DC) - The National Weather Service is forecasting a chance of snow or wintery mix beginning late Monday, March 2, between 4 pm and 11 pm, with precipitation continuing into Tuesday morning. Monday afternoon pavement temperatures are expected to be in the 50s, rendering any snow showers unlikely to stick. However, the District could see up to a half inch of accumulation before transitioning to a wintery mix.

To prepare for potentially slushy conditions during the Tuesday morning commute, the DC Snow Team will activate a full deployment on Monday, March 2. Plows will begin treating major roadways with salt at noon.

The full deployment will include roughly 200 heavy and light plows. Heavy plows (six- and 10-wheel dump trucks) treat highways, streets, bridges, ramps, and other elevated structures, and light plows (pick-up trucks) treat smaller streets. Bike lanes across the District are serviced by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), with protected bike lanes typically cleared six to 24 hours after motor vehicle travel lanes.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) leads the District Snow Team with support from DDOT, Department of General Services (DGS), Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), Serve DC, and several other agencies.
