A-State to Host Lab Safety Awareness Week with Live Demonstrations

JONESBORO - Every day, students at Arkansas State University are immersed in educational experiences to prepare them for their future careers. Many of those experiences are spent in laboratories across campus.

To further that education, an inaugural Lab Safety Awareness Week will be held Monday, Sept. 29, through Friday, Oct. 3.

"This is dedicated time to promote best practices, raise awareness and reinforce our commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant laboratory environment," said Melissa Dooley, director of Environmental Health and Safety.

This week-long event brings together experts, faculty, staff and students to engage in hands-on activities, critical discussions and practical training sessions designed to elevate the collective understanding of laboratory safety.

"As a learning institution, it is important that we reinforce the idea that safety is everyone's responsibility. Dedicating a week to safety helps normalize safe practices and encourages proactive behavior in labs," said Dooley

During the week of safety events, there will be fire extinguisher demonstrations, emergency preparedness workshops, chemical safety protocols, and a review of equipment-specific standard operating procedures.

"Universities often have complex lab environments with chemicals, equipment and procedures that pose risks. Awareness and training help prevent accidents, injuries and costly damage. Many students are new to lab environments. This week will provide hands-on learning, demonstrations and expert guidance that build confidence and competence in safe lab practices," Dooley continued.

This week of learning objectives also helps the university meet regulatory and institutional safety standards. Dooley said hosting events like this one shows a commitment to continued compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other safety regulations.

"When safety is openly discussed, students and staff are more likely to report hazards or unsafe behavior, leading to a safer overall environment," added Dooley.

There will be guest speakers, games and giveaways to make safety approachable and engaging. Dooley said this safety week will also foster collaboration between departments across campus, vendors and local emergency service personnel.

"We want the community to know that this week is designed to be engaging, educational and inclusive," said Dooley. "Whether you're a student, faculty member or staff, these events offer hands-on experiences, expert insights and practical tools to help everyone feel confident and competent in lab environments."

Demonstrations include the practical use of CPR, emergency eyewash and showers, selecting the correct personal protective equipment (PPE), and use of autoclaves, which are used to sterilize items used in the lab.
