PITTSBURGH - Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today announced that Jeffrey Cohen, MD, a nationally recognized health care innovator, has been selected by Modern Healthcare as a winner of one of its prestigious 2026 Innovators Awards.
The magazine's award program recognizes individuals and organizations that drive meaningful innovation to improve care delivery, achieve measurable results, and advance both clinical and financial performance in the health care industry.
Modern Healthcare is one of the nation's most influential sources of health care business and policy news. Dr. Cohen, who is AHN's Chief Physician Executive, Community Health and Innovation, was recognized in the Individual Honoree category.
He is being honored for his transformative leadership in reinventing AHN Suburban, converting the previously shuttered hospital into a thriving center for health care innovation and community revitalization. Through his vision, the century-old facility has become a dynamic hub for care delivery, research, business incubation, education, and social opportunity - fundamentally strengthening community resilience.
"Medicine starts with an idea," said Dr. Cohen. "Then you need a mechanism to bring that idea to fruition, a willingness to change mindsets across the system, and - most importantly - a collaborative environment that allows those ideas to grow and flourish."
Rather than allowing the former Suburban General Hospital to stand as a symbol of lost access, Dr. Cohen reimagined the nearly empty campus as a place where health care challenges are actively solved through imagination and collaboration. As AHN's innovation lead, he spearheaded a joint venture with Innovation Works to create AlphaLab Health, a biotech and life sciences accelerator now based at AHN Suburban in Bellevue, Pa.
The partnership supports early-stage companies developing solutions to critical health care delivery and access gaps, guided by experienced clinical and business mentors.
The AlphaLab Health model is designed to be self-sustaining: each selected company receives an investment of up to $100,000 in exchange for 2% equity via a convertible note. As companies grow and monetize, returns are recycled back into the fund, ensuring long-term support for future healthcare innovators.
"Dr. Cohen brings a holistic perspective to healthcare innovation. Through our collaboration on AlphaLab Health, we've supported 29 companies advancing new solutions while attracting more than $65 million in follow-on funding," said Ven Raju, President and CEO of Innovation Works. "What sets Jeff apart is his ability to look beyond individual programs and focus on how innovation can transform entire communities. His work at AHN Suburban shows how strategic investment in entrepreneurship and healthcare can drive economic growth, expand opportunity, and reimagine what a community can become."
Since 2021, AHN Suburban's partnership with AlphaLab Health has invested in 36 companies, which collectively have secured more than $65 million in follow-on funding and generated 114 direct jobs and 362 indirect jobs. This economic revitalization is reflected across Bellevue, where median household income increased substantially since the reopening of AHN Suburban. In 2020, the five-year rolling estimate for annual median household income stood at $49,991 in 2020 dollars, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey. In 2024, the five-year estimate for annual median household income in Bellevue was at $68,827.
AlphaLab Health has also attracted $19 million in philanthropic funding within its first four years, enabling the creation of a revolving investment fund that provides a sustainable, permanent source of capital for healthcare innovation.
"Dr. Cohen's ability to envision and execute such a transformative project is truly inspiring," said Mark Sevco, president of Allegheny Health Network. "His commitment to leveraging innovation not only for medical advancement but for the holistic betterment of the community exemplifies the very best of healthcare leadership. AHN Suburban stands as a testament to what's possible when we think beyond the hospital's walls."
Today, AHN Suburban functions as a diverse innovation ecosystem, housing a pharmaceutical company, a software firm specializing in sleep apnea mask fitting, a manufacturer of biodegradable pill cases, a company producing specialized seating for individuals with spinal disorders, and a community catering incubator utilizing the former hospital's commercial kitchen, among other ventures.
A separate partnership with the neighboring, under-resourced Northgate School District further strengthens AHN Suburban's community impact by providing students with hands-on workforce development opportunities and greater educational stability.
The district's leadership credits the collaboration with meaningful gains in student achievement. In 2024, Northgate's elementary school students - in all grade levels - performed above the state average for Pennsylvania System of School Assessment reading scores, and for each of the last three years, the high school dropout rate has been below the Pennsylvania state average.
Beyond AHN Suburban, Dr. Cohen's career reflects more than four decades of innovation and leadership. A practicing urologist, he has also served as president and CEO of AHN Allegheny General Hospital and held senior leadership and academic roles over the course of his career.
A self-described "serial disrupter and entrepreneur," Dr. Cohen was among the first physicians globally to use lasers for kidney stone treatment and holds more than 30 U.S. patents for groundbreaking advances in urology, including laser lithotripsy, fiber-optic endoscopy, piezoelectric biplanar transrectal ultrasound, and cryosurgery.
Central to Dr. Cohen's work is the belief that innovation must uplift communities. His passion focuses on accelerating the transition from a sickness-care system to a true value-based health model that expands access and opportunity. His vision for AHN Suburban includes building enduring partnerships with local, regional, and international stakeholders committed to solving health care's most pressing challenges.
Dr. Cohen earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center and completed his residency in general surgery at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland, followed by a residency in urologic oncology and a fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He has been board-certified by the American Board of Urology since 1986 and previously served as an associate professor of surgery at Drexel University.
In addition to his clinical and executive career, Dr. Cohen is deeply engaged in civic leadership and philanthropy. He serves as a volunteer advisor to The Buhl Foundation and Drexel University, and previously served on the board of the Strickland Global Leadership Institute and Moonshot Museum. He also advises under-resourced communities globally on how to replicate the AHN Suburban model, transforming shuttered hospitals into engines of innovation and economic growth.
