Senator Baldwin Secures $1 Million for 4 Wisconsin Projects to Respond to Emergencies and Keep Communities Safe

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced she secured $1 million in federal funding for four projects across Wisconsin to help communities respond to emergencies, prepare and build resiliency for disasters, and keep families safe. Senator Baldwin secured the funding in the Department of Homeland Security annual funding legislation that was passed into law recently.

"Wisconsin families need to know that when an emergency strikes, their communities have what they need to keep them safe and help them recover," said Senator Baldwin. "I'm proud to have secured this funding to help communities across our state strengthen infrastructure, improve emergency preparedness, and keep Wisconsin families safe for years to come."

The funding package included direct support for four projects across Wisconsin. The following projects were funded:

Iron County Forestry Department

$375,000 to implement coastal resiliency strategies to stabilize the Lake Superior shoreline, as well as the public roadway located west of Saxon Harbor.

"The funding for the Saxon Harbor Lake Superior Restoration Project is one that the Town of Saxon and Iron County Forestry have been working towards for more than 8 years. The project will protect over 500 feet of Lake Superior shoreline to the west of the Saxon Harbor marina," said Eric Peterson, Iron County Forest Administrator. "This project will use a combination of rock and other nature-based methods to mitigate erosion of the steep claybanks and prevent the loss of Harbor Drive, protecting the only alternate access to Saxon Harbor. The Iron County Forestry Department and the Town of Saxon appreciate Senator Baldwin's efforts to help us make this project a reality."

Village of La Farge

$250,000 to install storm water infrastructure drainage at the 300-Block of West Adams Street.

"This is vital funding for a necessary stormwater project that has been needed for many years on a busy street in the Village of La Farge, which is the main access to our K-12 school and Village Park. This infrastructure funding will be a significant and positive impact on our community and visitors," said Aaron Nemec, La Farge Village President.

UW-Whitewater Police Department

$225,000 to upgrade the campus and community Emergency Operations Center (EOC) with sustainable redundancies to ensure durational functionality during emergencies and large-scale events.

Resilient Southwest Wisconsin/Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission

$150,000 to conduct a regional vulnerability assessment and build resilience coalitions.
