Night vision goggles have come to play a crucial role in a wide range of situations. Thales innovations over the past 35 years have powered the development of its Thales NightRise NVG family. Tailored to the specific needs of every type of user, this complete range of solutions is designed to meet a single overarching objective - seeing before being seen.

Night-time operations on the ground or in the air now expose forces to a new set of hazards.

Another major challenge in night vision is the ability to see in the very darkest environments.

Once upon a time, darkness was an asset that armies could exploit to their advantage. But nowadays, the widespread use of infrared sensors and drones equipped with image intensification systems has flipped that script. Night-time operations on the ground or in the air now expose forces to a new set of hazards, making night vision capability a key technology where the power of innovation can deliver a vital edge.

Night vision requirements vary according to the operational situation. Infantry patrols, special forces units and fighter pilots on night missions all have different needs. "That's why Thales has developed a comprehensive range of night vision goggles tailored to every use case," explains a Thales insider. Drawing on operational feedback from users in the field and leveraging the Group's long-standing record of innovation, Thales has repeatedly set new standards of ergonomic design, robustness, comfort and optical performance.

Thales NightRise NVG goggles are available in two different configurations: bi-ocular systems, in which the same image is fed via a single objective lens to two eyepieces, so that both eyes view the same output simultaneously; and binocular systems with two eyepieces and two lenses to provide true stereoscopic vision.

Lightweight solutions for maximum agility on the ground

Soldiers familiar with night-time operations know only too well that wearing night vision goggles is a potential source of discomfort and physical strain. This can impact reaction time and operational effectiveness, presenting a challenge in terms of both tactical superiority and survivability.

Carrying the weight of a head-worn device for hours on end is an invisible enemy for soldiers on the ground. Every extra gram increases neck and eye strain, a factor that Thales addressed as long ago as 1996 with the pioneering "folded" architecture of Thales NightRise NVG LUCIE, which is still in service with armed forces around the world. Thales NightRise NVG MINIE, and its later O-NYX variant, both with exceptionally lightweight and compact designs, took up the baton in 2019.

A few years later, Thales NightRise NVG NELLIE (and the Bi-NYX variant developed for the French Army) took performance to a new level, with two lenses offering a wider field of view (47 degrees compared with 40 degrees) and two separate eyepieces. This innovation delivers the stereoscopic vision that's ideal for driving at night and operating in rugged terrain.

Thales NightRise NVG MINIE-D/IR meets another vital need by fusing image intensification and infrared imagery, allowing early threat detection by overlaying two spectral bands without emitting any visible light. This capability enhances mission survivability while shortening the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act).

Another major challenge in night vision is the ability to see in the very darkest environments. Thales NightRise NVG BONIE HP meets this need by combining cutting-edge optical sensitivity (via a wide-aperture lens to maximise light gathering) with stereoscopic vision technology originally developed to equip the Thales NightRise NVG HELIE for helicopter pilots (see below).

The more recently developed Thales NightRise NVG PANORAMIC is designed to support counter-terrorism and hostage rescue operations, where split-second perception is more than ever key to gaining a tactical edge.

Combining performance and durability for air operations

Airborne missions have their own specific night vision requirements. When flying at high speed, discrepancies in image uniformity between the centre and the edges of a pilot's field of view, for example, can distort their perception of the terrain below.

Thales NightRise NVG HELIE allows helicopter pilots to see even on the darkest nights, with no moon or cloud cover. "This product stands out from its competitors thanks to its exceptional capabilities in very low light conditions. With its 40-degree field of view and a large digital aperture, it can gather far more light than other models," explains our expert. The proven reliability of Thales NightRise NVG HELIE also makes this product ideal for civilian applications - such as maritime surveillance, customs operations and maritime/mountain search and rescue - as well as military operations.

Thales NightRise NVG ANGIE is specifically designed for fighter pilots. Unlike night vision goggles for infantry soldiers, this equipment has to be capable of withstanding vibrations during flight, as well as landing impacts and the blast forces involved when a crew ejects. "Ejection-resistant design is just one of the special features of a product tailored to the unique operating conditions of flying a combat aircraft," says our expert.

Leveraging Thales's proven capacity for innovation and a design process based on user feedback from members of the armed forces, Thales NightRise NVG family are a perfect match for the new realities of the full range of operational missions. All the models in the range, for applications either on the ground or in the air, offer the levels of water resistance and resilience to extreme temperature variations that are essential for use in hostile environments.

For over thirty years, Thales has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation to ensure mission success in real-world operational conditions, and today its Thales NightRise NVG family are in service with the armed forces of more than 55 countries around the world.
