At the opening of the High-level Week of the UN General Assembly's 80th session at UN Headquarters in New York, State Secretary Melita Gabrič signed the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel on behalf of Slovenia, which was also one of the first states invited to adopt the Declaration.

The Declaration was prepared by a cross-regional group of countries - Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Sierra Leone, Switzerland and the United Kingdom - in cooperation with humanitarian organisations. The group was established last September at the initiative of Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

"In view of the growing number of humanitarian workers being killed and attacked, the Declaration commits states to respecting international humanitarian law, as well as taking practical measures aimed at strengthening its implementation and protection. Humanitarian workers must never be targets of attack," State Secretary Gabrič stressed at the signing.

To date, the Declaration has been signed by 105 states. It complements UN Security Council Resolution 2730 (2024), which Slovenia co-sponsored as a strong advocate of respect for international humanitarian law.
