North Carolina Zoo Celebrates One Million Hours of Volunteer Support

The North Carolina Zoo and Botanical Gardens, a division of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, recently surpassed a million hours of donated service since the volunteer program was established in the late 1970s.

This achievement encompasses decades of dedication from thousands of volunteers, including individuals, families, interns, corporate partners, and community groups. Volunteer contributions have helped create meaningful, memorable experiences for millions of guests each year while simultaneously advancing the Zoo's work in conservation, education, and wildlife care.

"These passionate individuals generously share their time, talents, and expertise in support of the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and wild places," Interim Zoo Director Diane Villa said. "They've also helped make the Zoo the welcoming, engaging destination it is today. This milestone reflects the spirit of community emblematic of our iconic state zoo."

Volunteers play vital roles across nearly every facet of Zoo operations. They greet guests, guide educational experiences, support animal care teams and assist with special events.

Our volunteers are storytellers, stewards, and ambassadors who bring our mission to life every single day," Director of Volunteer and Intern Services Toy Lambeth said. "Volunteers are at the heart of what makes the Zoo so special. Their generosity strengthens our ability to serve our guests, care for our animals, and champion conservation efforts."

More than just a number, the one-million-hour mark speaks to the enduring partnerships between the Zoo and local schools, businesses, and civic organizations. These collaborations have fostered a shared sense of purpose across North Carolina, uniting people of all ages and backgrounds around a common goal: protecting the natural world for future generations.
