In observance of the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States of America, West Virginia University will close early Thursday (July 2) following a proclamation from Gov. Patrick Morrisey granting an additional half-day off to state employees.
The early closure includes WVU Potomac State College, WVU Institute of Technology, and WVU Extension.
In-person classes in Morgantown, Keyser, and Beckley will be canceled starting at noon. Online classes are not affected by the early closure.
Employees will be excused from the second half of Thursday with no charge against accrued annual leave. The July 2 closure will be effective for personnel beginning at noon.
To be eligible for the half-day July 2 holiday, employees must:
• Be benefits-eligible and active on WVU payroll on July 2;
• Not be in a terminal annual leave status; and
• Work their full shift or have enough paid leave to cover any amount of time absent on the working day prior to and immediately following the holiday.
The July 2 holiday will be paid at regular straight-time pay. For a full-time employee, that is 4.75 hours. The holiday pay/hours are pro-rated by FTE for employees who are less than full time.
Employees who have already requested annual leave on the afternoon of July 2 should access the Applaud system to cancel their leave.
Some essential campus services will remain open.
Certain employees will be contacted by their supervisor with additional information regarding a holiday work schedule to support ongoing campus services. Additional questions from employees should be directed to supervisors.
WVU Health Sciences faculty, staff and students who work in patient care areas or in clinical rotations should check with their dean, program director or clinic manager for schedule specifics.
WVU Extension will provide separate guidance for summer activities.
Campus tours are scheduled to continue as planned and the WVU Visitors Center will remain open through 4 p.m. Thursday (July 2).
The University was already scheduled to be closed on Friday (July 3).
Read Gov. Morrisey's proclamation.
