Congressman John Moolenaar released the following statement in response to Gotion, a company beholden to the Chinese Communist Party, reaching a settlement agreement in its lawsuit against Green Charter Township, the community which wholly rejected it:
"Four years ago, Gotion came to Michigan with rosy promises, an influence campaign on local and state leaders, and misled the community about its ties to the Chinese Communist Party. When the residents of Green Charter Township repeatedly showed they did not support Gotion; instead of listening to the people, Gotion fought them, and attempted to bankrupt the town" said Moolenaar. "While it is unfortunate Michigan taxpayers will not receive restitution from the state subsidies Gotion refused to pay back, I am pleased the community can now rest knowing they stopped the CCP from getting a foothold in their small town."
Gotion is the "wholly-owned and controlled" subsidiary of its Chinese parent company, Gotion High-Tech, and receives subsidies from the Chinese government. On October 5, 2022 Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Gotion agreed to build a battery component factory in Mecosta County. In November 2023, the residents of Green Charter Township rejected the Gotion project, recalling all members of the Township Board of Trustees who supported the project.
On September 17, 2025, the Michigan Strategic Fund notified Gotion the company was in default on its obligations established in its grant agreement with the state of Michigan: making no progress on its project in over 120 days, and by suing Green Charter Township. The state gave Gotion 30 days to resolve these issues, informing the company if it did not, its contract with the state would be terminated.
Congressman Moolenaar worked with community leaders to uncover Gotion's ties to the CCP and fought in Congress to stop its project. Last year, his NO GOTION policy became law. This policy prohibits taxpayer funding in the so-called "Inflation Reduction Act" from going to CCP-affiliated companies.
