30,000 Pounds of Food Scraps Composted at Farmers’ Markets: Closing in on 2025 Food Scraps Recycling Goal

The City of Madison Streets Division is happy to announce that we have collected 30,177 pounds of food scraps for composing at our three farmers' market drop-off sites.

In 2025, our goal is to collect 40,000 pounds of food scraps for composting. That is approximately the weight of 20 mature bison, which would make for a small (yet mighty) herd.

We have just under 10,000 pounds of scraps to collect to reach this year's goal.

And there are only 7 weeks left in the farmers' market season.

Will we reach the goal for 40,000 pounds?

Will we round up a whole herd of bison by the end of the market season?

That will be up to you, of course. And we certainly hope to see you at one of the market sites to help.

How to Compost Your Scraps at the Farmers' Markets

You can take your scraps for free to one of three neighborhood farmers' market locations for composting.

The sites are the South Madison Farmers' Market, the Eastside Farmers' Market, and the Westside Community Market. Hours and exact location details can be found on the food scraps composting website.

We can accept raw fruits and vegetables (and their peelings), corn cobs, coffee grounds, eggshells, and so on. A list of items we can accept and what we cannot accept is available on the food scraps website. You can also speak with the attendants at the market site drop-off booth.

Free buckets to help you carry your scraps to the market can be picked up at the booths (though you can use whatever you like to bring your scraps to us). You can also pick up printed guides or even fun stickers from any of the three market site locations.

Additional Details

More information about food scraps, including how to prevent food waste, can be found on the food scraps website.

The Dane County Department of Waste and Renewables has a separate "Food Scrap Stop" program also operating in Madison. Their program is independent from the farmers' market sites. You can find out more about the Dane County program on their website.
